The Role of Media in Innovation

by Bob Turek on February 1st, 2008

innovation light bulb with people standing around it One organization that seems to do a good job of sparking innovation in the industry they cover is Plastics News. Not only do they provide an excellent weekly publication that is read industry-wide, they also coordinate excellent conferences that are attended by the top executives in the industry. As a representative for a consulting firm considering new services projects for the industry, I attended their 3 day 2007 conference in San Diego and received exactly what I needed.

What I wanted to understand were the key issues, initiatives and innovations (from both a product and business process perspective) being dealt with at the executive level. It was an excellent mix of formal presentations and executive round tables where you could hear candid opinions of industry leaders.

They seem to do a good job of coordinating views and opinions of consulting firms, companies, and academics. Even difficult issues were tackled in the San Diego conference: a roundtable about environmental issues included the head of a California environmental organization and the president of a local plastic bag company that she was doing work with. This type of collaboration, in a relatively public setting, is rare.

Do you have examples of organizations like Plastics News that act as a conduit for innovation and problem solving? Give me some examples of how such organizations have assisted your career, company, and industry- bad or good.
