Sustainability Is Gaining Traction and Projects

by Bob Turek on April 11th, 2008

sustainabilitySustainability. Have you heard about it? I’ve recently been exposed to the term by my software company as it relates to asset management software and projects through a new acronym called GAS:

Global Asset Sustainability (GAS): the management of property, plant, and equipment to meet the operations, economic, and socio-economic needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own such needs.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has defined it:

Social and environmental practices that protect and enhance the human and natural resouces needed by future generations to enjoy a quality of life equal to or greater than our own.

Wikipedia informs us that:

Though relatively new, the term “sustainability” has already proved useful. Sustainability discourse is discussion of how to make human economic systems last longer and have less impact on ecological systems, and particularly relates to concern over major global problems relating to climate change and oil depletion.

The definition will get a little jumbled as firms and the media attempt to come out with technology and other solutions to satisfy the demand for sustainability projects. In order to clear the air Wikipedia offers the original definition from The Bruntland Commission led by the former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland. They dealt with “development”, economic or otherwise, saying:

…development that “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Too simple? It does a good job of putting constraints around the problem. Is your firm dealing with sustainability? Why is it important?
