Predicting Economic Conditions- Is It Possible?

by Bob Turek on March 6th, 2008

fuelCFO.com lists the “Top 10 Concerns of CFOs” world-wide (US, Europe and Asia) saying:

“With the costs of fuel and health care high on CFOs’ list of worries, many expect the once-indefatigable U.S. consumer to finally take a break.”

My personal reaction to reign in my spending late last year had to do with losing my job for a couple of months along with the fuel and health care costs. Upon taking a good look at my spending I was a bit surprised about how fuel costs have impacted my family and immediately took measures to cut down on driving, drive higher mileage cars, and drive more conservatively.

What would “finally” make you change your spending habits if you haven’t already? Is there a long lag between changes in spending patterns and rises in certain costs (like fuel) that make it difficult to predict what will happen to our economy? Sometimes I think it is impossible to predict anything given these lags, and changes that can occur during the lags.
