by Bob Turek on October 29th, 2007

One role of a PMO is to provide information for a governance board to enable assessment and prioritization of projects. Another role is being talked about: driving innovation. Research to find the best of the best innovations, whether they are in the same industry or not, can become a vital function for PMs in a PMO. Innovative ideas and concepts drive strategies that in turn drive tactics that drive projects. So, projects are necessary to translate these innovative ideas and concepts into reality. This puts the PMO into the project creation role and possibly the project selling role. After all, these types of projects must be justified and sold to governance boards of executives from various areas within the company.
