Managers! You Can’t Do It By Yourself
Miki Saxon writes about leaders that “do”. That alone says a lot; her way with words spark my brain cells. Read about “team” vs. “ream” leadership as she illuminates private equity funding approaches and her short but sweet post on her other blog about gifts that matter. They deal with managers, whether supervisors, project managers, or CEOs, that understand the word “team” and understand the specific value that individuals have in their company.
Knowing yourself first, as a manager, is essential to having the confidence to allow individuals to blossom under your care. Position yourself to care deeply about your employees by saying “what can the company do to further your career”, and then do it; this creates people who will focus on making you successful.

Knowledge of self is built in many ways, and this core philosophy / mind set / emotional intelligence is what leaders turn to in those moments when they have to inspire.
It may sound trite, but you can not ask of your team what you are not willing to give of yourself. Another dimension of that is that you may have given of yourself earlier, either through dedication to your company and this bank is what you can draw upon for team building, as it will show in how and who you recruit, and what you can inspire people to do.

Bob, high praise indeed, I’m blushing.
I would add that before you can know yourself as a manager you need to know yourself as a person, what I call MAP (mindset, attitude, philosophy)™, similar to what ActiveEngine Sensei mentions. Once you know your MAP, then you can determine that which you want to keep, enhance, modify or change.
Your Map is truly yours, in your control and always your choice.
