Do Lean and Theory of Constraints Apply to PM?
An excellent book reveals that the answer is a resounding “YES!” My background in lean manufacturing, which is closely aligned with Theory of Constraints (TOC) principles, was in applying these approaches to the manufacturing of hard products. Lean and TOC have since been applied in traditional office environments and in the health care industry. The book, Advanced Project Portfolio Management and the PMO: Multplying ROI at Warp Speed, by Gerald Kendall and Steven Rollins, is becoming a “bible” among project management experts for it’s innovative take on portfolio management and PMOs along with it’s innovative blending of TOC principles into the mix. This isn’t just theory, as the many case studies in the book prove. This area will be the subject of many posts to come. I sure would like to hear if other PMs have been exposed to these principles and whether you have applied them to your PM organizations and efforts.
