Climate Change is NOT a Serious Business Issue
McKinsey Quarterly’s survey of worldwide executives about climate change reveals that it is not a serious issue–yet. My take on this is that climate change is largely a media issue driven by political interests that the jury is still out on. Evidence to support this view is in the survey:
“Relatively few companies…currently appear to be translating the importance they place on climate change into corporate action. Fully 44 percent of CEOs, for example, note that climate change isn’t a significant item on their agendas. Further, many respondents report their companies consider climate change only occasionally at best when managing corporate reputation and brands, developing new products, or even managing environmental issues.”
McKinsey’s use of “climate change” as THE issue is so broad and subject to many interpretations as to be laughable. It could simply be that executives simply felt that without specifics they couldn’t answer the survey properly. One could argue that corporations just play along until real regulations hit, but if there is money to be made they will jump on the bandwagon. As for now, it is just too confusing an issue to deal with on any realistic level. What do you think? Is climate change affecting your company strategies? Do you think that climate change is a serious issue that companies should pay attention to? If so, what should they do? Don’t miss a post. Subscribe via EMAIL or RSS.
