Are The Dreaded Data Explosions Real? You Won’t Know Until You Look
My campaign to get the media to consider how market acceptance works (”early adopters” driving later adopters) was prompted by a Manufacturing Business Technology article on “Use of Business Intelligence Does Not Match the Hype“. Previous posts skewered some of the skewed thinking in the report. Here’s some more (skewed thinking that is):
“Similarly, people are constantly told that data volumes are exploding,” he continued. “But our findings don’t support this. BI applications, on the whole, aren’t very large and are not getting bigger.”
I hope I’m misunderstanding this! “Size” of BI applications have nothing to do with data volumes. Again, hopefullly this is a misprint or a misunderstanding, but this is a quote from the author of the report. Seems to me that, given the fact that companies are often unaware of their data levels, the question that should be asked is “have you investigated the amount, and trend, of data in your system and how clean it is?”
Have you investigated your data trends? How clean is the data in your systems? What is the value of understanding how data has “exploded” and cleaning it up?
