Amazing March 2008 Focused on the Economy, Climate Change and Obama

The month of March was amazing and quite diverse for projectmanagement411; there was a lot about the economy and it’s effect on projects. We have so much going on that can shed light on how project management can improve from political campaigns to climate change.
Here is a listing of the titles of my posts for […]

Cost-Benefit Analysis Is a Myth?

The EPA announces a new regulation limiting mercury emissions from coal-burning power plants; their coal industry cost estimate was $750M a year with a public health cost estimate of $50M a year. A Harvard Center for Risk Analysis study agreed with the $750M number but put the health cost at $5B. How does something like […]

CFOs Losing Confidence: Is This a Self Fulfilling Prophecy?

CFO magazine’s survey of CFOs around the world reveal a confidence shortfall. I like the analysis because it concentrates on confidence and optimism levels which drive spending patterns of companies:
“Optimism reached its lowest point since the study launched it’s optimism index six years ago. Pessimists outnumber optimists by a nine-to-one margin, with 72 percent of […]

“A Long, Ugly, Deep Recession”??

Jerry York, well known executive, has turned prognosticator according to CFO magazine’s article about York’s advice to CFOs about the possibility of a recession. I found York’s comments lacking in rationale and supportive facts. CFO seems to have embraced York’s musings without challenging them:
“It’s going to be a very bad recession, perhaps the worst I’ve […]

Short-Term Value Based Projects Can Justify Larger Technology Projects

Supply and Demand Chain Executive’s article on “2008 Supply and Demand Chain Executives Pros to Know” related the story of James Polak, Director, General Purchasing, PPG Industries. My background in spend analysis revealed a difficulty in getting firms to understand that there are tremendous savings in enabling corporate wide visibility of spend. PPG originally believed […]

Who Manages Climate Change In Your Company?

Should anybody be in charge of “climate change” in a business? I personally think it is a ridiculous question which, in a strange way, is supported by McKinsey’s executive climate change survey:

“There’s no consensus: about equal percentages of respondents apportion the responsibility for ensuring that their companies consider climate change to C-level executives, corporate-level strategists, […]

Does Climate Change Present an Opportunity or a Risk?

McKinsey’s questionable survey of executives about climate change did score some points with me when asking about climate change as an opportunity or a risk. Business people are smart; they see opportunity and risks in everything that comes along- even a vague, politically loaded one like climate change:

“Executives reveal little consensus when asked how they […]

Is Climate Change Regulation Full of Hot Air?

McKinsey’s executive climate change survey seems to suffer from ill defined issues. When questioning executives about whether they believe there will be climate change regulation, the results were predictably vague:

“Given the considerable uncertainties around climate change regulation, it is noteworthy that more than 80 percent of global executives expect some form of climate change regulation […]

Climate Change is NOT a Serious Business Issue

McKinsey Quarterly’s survey of worldwide executives about climate change reveals that it is not a serious issue–yet. My take on this is that climate change is largely a media issue driven by political interests that the jury is still out on. Evidence to support this view is in the survey:
“Relatively few companies…currently appear to be […]

Business Led Technology Projects Are More Valuable

Wisconsin Technology Network News writes about a business led project at Dean Health Insurance. What caught my interest was that the VP of Technology, Karl Richards, used a large technology project to enhance the Project Management Office (PMO), making it more “business led”:

“The best lesson he’s [Richard’s] learned from large IT implementations is that success […]
